The digital nomad lifestyle reaches India’s tech sector

With prime minister Modi’s push for entrepreneurship across the nation, modern startup culture has been gaining traction. And although remote working is a fairly new concept to be introduced in India, it’s catching on. 

And wherever there are startups and remote workers, there soon sprout up startups that cater to providing remote workers exactly what they need when they set off into the world to get work done while having adventures. Though the concept has already been implemented in western nations, through startups such as Embark, the Indian innovator who founded The Remote Life looks to introduce the concept to the growing Indian tech sector and open the world to adventurous professionals.

“Travels over the last year got me overwhelming feedback from a lot of professionals and entrepreneurs on how they would love to travel but they can’t leave their job for even a day,” described Nishchal Dua, the company’s CEO told ET about his entrepreneurial inspiration.

He then elaborated, “That’s when the program was built, initially as a closed one for just a limited number of people and the amazing response made me realize that this could be a real opportunity.”

The company takes care of all logistics for its applicants to work in a selected location around the world. Packages include arrangements for accommodations, visas, airport pickup, flight tickets, subscriptions for nearby co-working spaces, but above all, it provides a community.

Though traveling while working free from the confines of a desk job is a dream commonly shared by many, it does come with several drawbacks. Personal relationships, for one, can be highly affected by a nomadic lifestyle, according to Dua. By traveling with a support network, remote workers are free to travel the world but never left on their own.

“This is a new concept for [the] Indian market. Professionals here in India are not used to work remotely for long periods of time. But as the concept of freelancing and work-from-home is trending in India, so is remote-working.”

At the time this article is written, The Remote Life has trips scheduled till the end of 2018,  offering trips to 11 different destinations, such as Lima – Peru, Medellin – Colombia and Bali – Indonesia.
