5 Apps That Women Can Download For Their Safety

As the Delhi gang-rape issue escalates to a national level and with more and more reports of such incidents coming in to light, we share some apps with you that women can download for their safety.

1. Circle of 6 (Free; Android, iOS)

Circle of 6 is a free app for iOS and Android devices that lets you build a circle of six friends or trusted people to quickly call on when you’re in danger and need help, in a bad situation with someone else, or need to reach the authorities. With one touch, the app pings your trusted friends or emergency services with your request for help, along with your current location so they can find you.

Whether you install it on your own phone or suggest it to a good friend, Circle of 6 is worth an install. It’s available now for free in the iTunes App Store and at Google Play.

2. bSafe (Free; Android, iOS, Blackberry)

This uses a GPS based safety alarm that sends SOS messages during emergencies to the mobile numbers you have previously chosen. All you have to do is press a big red button on the app for them to be alerted. The app also allows selected friends to follow you live from a distance with real-time GPS tracing.

3. SOS Whistle (Free, Android)

SOS whistle does not send an SOS or let your friends know where you are. Rather, as the name suggests, the app has a very simple function. It triggers a very loud whistle. In fact, it can trigger a whistle sound even if the phone is in silent mode . Just tap the screen and it will start an alarm.

It also has a emergency screen flash function to indicate that you are in danger.

4. Life 360 Family Locator (Free; Android, iOS, Blackberry)

This app also using GPS tracking. Apart from its basic function of sending SOS messages to chosen numbers, it can be used for other purposes, such as saving your most commonly visited location, receiving automatic alerts when family members arrive or depart and viewing data of sex offenders in and around your area.

5. Fightback (Paid; All Smartphones and Java enabled devices)

Fightback is an India specific application that uses GPS, SMS, location maps, GPRS, email and Facebook to inform your friends and family. When the “Panic” button is pressed, the portal alerts page gets updated and even shows the location of the alert on Google Maps beside updating the user’s Facebook status with a SOS message.
